While there is some uncertainty regarding the 2020-21 season, the AFHL is remaining optimistic that the hockey season will begin as scheduled, and is working to stay as prepared as possible for when a decision is made by Hockey Canada’s Board of Directors, in conjunction with public health officials. AFHL PLAYERS COMMITTED TO POST-SECONDARY FOR 2020-21 SEASON

AFHL SPRING CAMP UPDATE

Spring Camps for ALL (U15 AA, U18 AA, and U18 AAA) AFHL levels and divisions will be effectively cancelled for 2020. Athletes will have the opportunity to gather information about programs during this time, however no formal evaluations will occur until tryouts for the 2020-2021 season can begin. MORE INFO >

 


2019-20 AFHL AWARD WINNERS

The Alberta Female Hockey League is pleased to announce the 2019-20 league award and scholarship winners. Four awards are handed out in each league: Most Valuable Player, Top Goaltender, Top Rookie, and Coach of the Year. One award is also given for the AFHL Administrator of the Year. RECIPIENTS >

 APPLICATIONS OPEN FOR 2020 FEMALE ELITE GOALIE CAMP

This two-day camp at Winsport Arena in Calgary on June 20-21 will feature four on ice session and four off ice sessions geared toward elite goaltenders and focus on techniques, tactics and how to excel at the highest level. The deadline to apply is March 6. APPLICATION >

ZONE 4 WINS ALBERTA WINTER GAMES GOLD

It was a thrilling finish at the 2020 Alberta Winter Games in Airdrie on February 17, with Zone 4 defeating Zone 3 in overtime to win the gold medal. RECAP >

AFHL ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT - ATHENA HAUCK

This month’s AFHL Alumni Spotlight focuses on Athena Hauck, a former Rocky Mountain Raider. Athena is currently in the Bachelor of Health Science program at Mount Royal University, and has a goal of becoming a Research Scientist of health in the future. Away from the rink, her favourite sport is canoe/kayak polo, which she has been playing since she was seven, and enjoys it because it is very unique and different from hockey. Athena’s favourite part about hockey is creating relationships and experiencing special moments with those same people. ATHENA’S BIO >

When practicing Puck Retrievals & Breakouts, look to focus on specific components. By separating out the different components, it is much easier to identify strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities. ROCKY MOUNTAIN RAIDERS AND LLOYDMINSTER STEELERS GIVE BACK TO THEIR COMMUNITIES

For the second year, the Rocky Mountain Raiders Midget AAA Female hockey team is partnering with a Seniors Care Home in Okotoks, Tudor Manor, to create memories that will last forever. MORE >

 

The Lloydminster Steelers are working with Project PJ by Olivia for the fifth straight year. Project PJ by Olivia was started by Olivia Brockhoff when she was 11, and since then over 6,000 pairs of PJs have been donated to the Stollery Hospital in Edmonton. PHOTOS >

The AFHL has begun a new season and we now enter full swing as the month of October comes to an end. The St. Albert Slash (Midget AAA), Calgary Fire White (Midget Elite), and Sherwood Park Royals (Bantam Elite) have gotten off to hot starts and lead their respective divisions at the end of the first month. THREE AFHL PLAYERS NAMED TO TEAM ALBERTA LEADERSHIP GROUP

Alexandria Spence (Lloydminster PWM Steelers) will captain Team Alberta, with defender Sierra LaPlante (Calgary Fire) and forward Brooklyn Schroeder (St. Albert Slash) serving as Assistant Captains. The Team Alberta U18 Female team is in Morden and Winkler, MB looking to continue their success after capturing gold at the 2019 Canada Winter Games. The goal is to learn more about parents’ beliefs and attitudes about the costs and benefits of spending time alone in childhood and adolescence. The 2019-20 Midget AAA season is set to begin on Friday, October 4 with two games leading off the weekend! Edmonton takes on Red Deer and Lloydminster heads to St. Albert. Calgary and the Rocky Mountain Raiders will begin their season on Saturday. Bantam and Midget Elite will get started on Friday, October 18. EVERY KID EVERY COMMUNITY APPLICATION DEADLINE - OCTOBER 31

The Every Kid Every Community Grant (EKEC) is an annual program to support hockey in Alberta. The Hockey Alberta Foundation would like to encourage all Alberta-based Community Groups, Pond Hockey Programs, Youth Groups, Recreational Groups, Community Leagues and Local Minor Hockey Associations (LMHA) and clubs who have an idea, project or program that align with the EKEC guiding principles whereby an individual OR group may benefit from a Player Assistance or Program Grant to apply.
